Sweeteners The Silent Killers
I was out grocery shopping the weekend, walking down the tinned food aisle about to pick up my usual Tinned baked beans. Now I know they aren’t the healthiest of foods but I find them a good Recovery snack to have after a tough training session. Still Conscious of their high sugar and salt content, I began looking for a healthy alternative that might be available. On the shelf stood a brand which had in big red bold letters NO ADDED SUGAR!. Being a self confessed food pessimist, I immediately scanned the nutritional information on the label. To my surprise there was only 1.7g of sugar per 100g in comparison to my usual tin containing 4.7g per 100g. Like someone who had found gold I packed my trolley full of what I thought was “healthy” “low sugared tin of beans”.
This morning I was in the kitchen looking for a tasty recovery meal and remembered my amazing low sugar beans Id bought. Heated them up, cooked up an Omelette and sat down to enjoy. I couldn’t figure out how they tasted the exact same as my full sugar beans and actually a little tastier. Curiously I had another look at the label and in tiny writing down the bottom was SWEETENER SACCHARIN…… ONE OF THE MOST TOXIC SWEETENERS ON THE MARKET.
Studies show artificial sweeteners can not only be harmful but truly toxic to our bodies. Saccharin is a sulfa based sweetener and early safety studies showed this particular sweetener to cause bladder cancer in rats. The FDA recently lifted the requirement that saccharin be labeled on all food packages as a carcinogen (harmful to health) because it is yet to be proven that it causes bladder cancer in humans.
The topic of artificial sweeteners is probably one of the most controversial nutrition topics out there at the moment, some saying they are healthy alternative to weight control and diabetes, others saying they are worse than sugar and extremely harmful to the metabolism. I tend to agree with the latter, a fact no one can dispute is that artificial sweeteners are CHEMICALS which have been artificially manufactured, there is nothing natural about them.
Recent research has shown Artificial sweeteners may disrupt the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar, causing metabolic changes that can be a precursor to diabetes and weight GAIN. Think twice before popping the Splenda into your coffee or drinking a diet drink.
There is one natural sweetener on the market which I encourage everyone to swap the artificial ones for and that is STEVIA.
Stevia is extracted from the leaves of a plant, it is very sweet and virtually no calories. It has shown to improve insulin sensitivity, reduce oxidized LDL cholesterol and reduce plaque build up in the arteries.
Moral of the story……Always READ your labels carefully and think NATURAL, what might seem a healthy alternative 9/10 with the food and drink industry is Not!
